VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing (RQF)

There are over 35,700 hairdressing salons in the UK employing around 200,000 people. There’s a variety of salon types, some offer services to both women and men but mostly they’re small to medium sized businesses.  A high number of people choose to go into self employment. They open their own micro-businesses – working as a mobile hairdresser or opening their own salon.

Heard of vocational learning? It means learning on the job. It’s a great option to consider after you leave school. This Level 2 hairdressing apprenticeship has been specifically designed for school leavers who are between 16-19 years of age. Is this you? What will you learn and study?

You’ll work as a junior hairdresser/stylist and learn about consulting with clients, shampooing and conditioning hair, cutting, blow-drying, colouring and most importantly - keeping clients happy and relaxed.  As a learner you’ll work in, and have your hairdressing skills assessed in a commercial salon. It’s in this real working environment that coaching is fun and effective.

What can you do after?

After finishing this Diploma in Hairdressing, you can enter or develop a role as:

  • Junior Stylist

Carrying out services including basic cutting, styling, colouring, drying and finishing.

You can also progress onto the Advanced Level Hairdressing Apprenticeship.

Mandatory - from this group you'll need to cover a minimum of 7 units and earn a minimum of 55 credits.

  • Style and finish hair - 6 Credits
  • Set and dress hair - 7 Credits
  • Cut hair using basic techniques - 12 Credits
  • Colour and lighten hair - 14 Credits
  • Advise and consult with clients - 8 Credits
  • Shampoo, condition and treat your help and scalp - 5 Credits
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work - 3 Credits

Optional - from this group you'll need to cover a minimum of 2 units and earn a minimum of 9 credits.

  • Remove hair extensions - 5 Credits
  • Relax hair - 9 Credits
  • Perm an neautralise hair - 10 Credits
  • Plait and twist hair - 5 Credits
  • Temporarily attach hair to enhance a style - 3 Credits
  • Fulfil salon reception duties - 6 Credits
  • Cut men's hairstyles - 6 Credits

You’ll be awarded VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing once you’ve successfully finished this apprenticeship programme. The qualification allows you to show that you have Level 2 hairdressing skills. It’s recognised by the UK's leading hairdressing professional association (The Hairdressing Council) as being fit for preparing learners for a career as a junior hairdresser/stylist.

You’ll be aged between 16 – 19 years old and whilst there are no formal entry requirements, you should have a good standard of education to join one of our apprentice schemes.

Ideally you’ll have 4 GCSE’s at grade C or above, preferably in English & Maths and ICT. If you have lower grades, you still might also be able to gain entry. We’ll assess your general ability and to see if you have self-reliance, motivation and the people skills to get started.
