VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing (RQF)

The hairdressing industry regards this Advanced Hairdressing Apprenticeship as the sign of a professional stylist. With it, you’ll build upon your current hairdressing skills and knowledge to progress up the career ladder. It includes everything you’ll need to work effectively as an advanced hairdresser/stylist. You’ll develop both your creative and business abilities in client consultation, advanced cutting techniques and marketing salon services.

Is this the right apprenticeship for you?

It’s an advantage to have previous experience of working within the hairdressing industry and have a Level 2 qualification in hairdressing. The VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (RQF) ican only be achieved in an emploued situation where the apprentice has their own client base.. It can only be delivered by providers like DTS that have, or have access to a 'real' salon - not a realistic working environment.

What will you learn and study?

It’ll expand upon and improve your technical hairdressing skills, preparing you to work confidently in a more senior role. You’ll develop your skills more by selecting a number of optional, specialist units. These can include: hair colour correction, specialist scalp services and treatments, hair extension services, perming, colouring and creative hairdressing design.

What can you do after?

After finishing this Level 3 Apprenticeship in Hairdressing you can enter or develop a role as a:

  • Senior Stylist or Hairdresser
  • Self employed hairdresser
  • Hairdesser in television, film, catwalk work etc

Mandatory - from this group you'll need to cover a minimum of 8 units and earn a minimum of 48 credits.

  • Creatively style and dress hair  - 7 Credits
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques - 14 Credits
  • Creatively colour and lighten hair - 14 Credits
  • Provide client consultation services - 8 Credits

Optional - from this group you'll need to cover a minimum of 1 units and earn a minimum of 6 credits.

  • Fulfil salon reception duties - 6 Credits
  • Provide a variety of relaxing services - 9 Credits
  • Hair colour correction services - 15 Credits
  • Provide creative hair extension services - 8 Credits
  • Create a variety of permed effects - 10 Credits
  • Develop, enhance and evaluate your creative hairdressing skills - 9 Credits
  • Provide specialist hair and scalp treatments - 12 Credits
  • Contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of promotional activities - 10 Credits
  • Contribute to the financail effectiveness of the business - 7 Credits
  • Cut men's hairstyles - 6 Credits

You’ll be awarded VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF) once you’ve successfully finished this apprenticeship programme. The qualification allows you to show that you have Level 3 hairdressing skills. Its main purpose is to prepare you to become employed as a senior hairdresser/stylist. With this level 3 Apprenticeship under your belt, employers will know that you’ve got the training needed to do the job and progress through the industry.

You’ll be aged between 16 – 19 years old and whilst there are no formal entry requirements, you should have a good standard of education to join one of our apprentice schemes. An initial assessment of your English and Maths will indicate if you have met the required entry level.

Ideally you’ll have 4 GCSE’s at grade C or above, preferably in English & Maths and ICT. If you have lower grades, you still might also be able to gain entry. We’ll assess your general ability and to see if you have self-reliance, motivation and the people skills to get started.
