The AAT Foundation Certificate

The AAT Foundation Certificate can be a life-changing qualification. This qualification is often that all-important first step towards a successful and fulfilling career in accountancy and/or finance. Whether you are new to accounting and finance or not, this qualification is a symbol that you want to succeed that employers respect and value. Those new to accounting will find this qualification will introduce you to the concepts underpinning all aspects of accounting and link them to the real day to day issues involved in keeping the books of a company. For those who already have experience, the qualification will give you more in-depth knowledge you can apply from day one of your studies.

This course is internationally recognised and you will be following in the footsteps of 1,000’s of students who have used this qualification to develop their career. The certificate also offers many progression routes and you may then choose to progress onto the level 3 course afterwards. Eitherway this AAT qualification will give you the skills to succeed and numerous options in terms of progression.

What you’ll learn and study on the course

In the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting, Level 2, qualification you will cover a range of foundation accounting and finance skills in five units. All five will need to be completed to achieve this qualification. You will learn 'bookkeeping transactions' and 'bookkeeping controls', 'elements of costing', 'how to use accounting software' and 'effective working in finance'.

What you can do with this qualification

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting can really launch your career. It offers a solid grounding in the core accounting knowledge and skills you need to get on, and get a job, or to build on, and continue learning. AAT Level 2 Accounting also provides a useful introduction to accountancy for people already working in an entry level finance role but looking to improve their job prospects as it is a way of getting formal recognition of your skills.

People who achieve this qualification can also seek employment as an accounts administrator/assistant, accounts payable clerk, a purchase/sales ledger clerk, trainee accounting technician and trainee finance assistant.

DTS offer the latest AAT syllabus with all learning materials offered online, for each unit. There is a mock test after each unit to ensure that you have learned the relevant study materials. The examination team will then establish if you are ready to take the test at an AAT test centre and schedule that in with you. AAT have a network of over 200 test centres across the UK. When you are ready to register for your first computer based test we will discuss with you the process to book into your test centre of choice. Each AAT Unit Level is graded; either Pass, Merit or Distinction. A Pass is 70-79%, a Merit is 80-89% and a Distinction is 90-100%

    Understanding the cost recording systems in an organisation and using different cost recording techniques. Using cost recording techniques and providing information on actual and budgeted costs and income.

    Computer Based Assessment

    Setting up accounting software and performing tasks on a computer, including processing sales and purchases transactions. Processing bank and cash transactions and carrying out period end routine tasks. Creating reports.

  • Work Effectively in Finanace
    Synoptic (End of Course) Assessment*

    Understanding the finance function within an organisation. Developing financial skills and producing work effectively. Understanding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and how this impacts on ethics, and sustainability within an organisation.

You study the course materials for each unit, which comprise a, media rich, combination of text, illustrations, spreadsheets, videos, interactive quizzes, social connections, peer discussion, debates and games. Computer Based Assessments

When you have completed the unit, you demonstrate learning with an end of unit online mock test, taken in PEARL, followed by a Unit Assessment at an AAT centre. This is the case for the first three units and you may get your provisional results back immediately.

Computer Based Projects

If you need to submit a computer based project, this will go to AAT for assessment which can lengthen the assessment process. This does not need to delay your progress though, as you will be given access to study the next unit.

Synoptic (End of Course) Assessment*

The last three units of this Level 3 qualification are tested, together with the learning you have completed on all the other units, in one final ‘synoptic’ general test. This is an end of course exam which you sit in an AAT test centre. The exam aims to test several units within the course (marked with an*). The tests will be available in “set assessment windows”, our examination services team will help you organise the scheduling of your tests, and final exam, so you can progress and concentrate on your studies.

AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting

AAT qualifications are universally respected and internationally recognised. Organisations hire AAT-qualified members for their knowledge, skills, diligence and enthusiasm, because AAT represents the highest standards of professionalism.
  • There are no formal requirements, but you do need a reasonable degree of competence in Maths and English.
  • You will need a valid UK address (AAT qualifications cannot be studied outside the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man).
  • You must have access to a PC and Internet to complete this course.
