People who are approaching the end of their lives always go through several emotional and physical changes, therefore needing all the support that they can get.

End of life care is when you give help and support to people who may have a terminal illness, for example, and approaching death in order to help them live a fulfilling and enriching life until they die.

Our course will therefore teach you all the essential information that you need in order to  improve your understanding of end of life care.

What you'll learn and study on the course

You'll learn about the current approaches to end of life care, communication skills in the context of end of life care,  the effects of symptoms in relation to end of life care, people’s responses to dying, how to offer appropriate support in the final hours of life and the process of grief and loss.

What you can do after with it

After completing this course, you can work within various health and social care settings, including hospices, care homes, care in the community and primary care.

Unit 1: Understand End of Life Care

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

  • Understand different attitudes towards death and dying
  • Understand the aims of end of life care
  • Understand current approaches to end of life care
  • Know the range of support services available to individuals and their families

Unit 2: Communication During End of Life Care

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

  • Understand communication skills in the context of end of life care
  • Understand how to overcome barriers to communication

Unit 3: Assessment and Care Planning in End of Life Care

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

  • Understand the holistic approach to end of life care
  • Understand person centred assessment and planning
  • Understand advance care planning

Unit 4: Person-Centered Approached to End of Life Care

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

  • Understand the effects of symptoms in relation to end of life care
  • Understand a range of therapeutic options used to support effective symptom
  • Understand the principles of pain management
  • Understand techniques for supporting a person with their social needs
  • Understand how to support a person’s spiritual, religious and cultural needs
  • Understand techniques for supporting a person with their psychological and emotional needs
  • Understand people’s responses to dying

Unit 5: Care During the Final Hours of Life and Bereavement Care

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

  • Understand how to offer appropriate support in the final hours of life
  • Understand how to care for the deceased person
  • Understand the process of grief and loss
  • Understand how to support people following bereavement

NCFE Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care (RQF)

On successful completion of our NCFE Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care (RQF) course you will receive a qualification listed on the RQF at level 3 (Qualification Reference Number: (501/0117/1). This course has also been assigned 16 credits.

There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds.
